Bark distortion can be defined as any break in the normal bark pattern of a log. Overgrown knots, mechanical wounds, holes of all types, ingrown bark, and bird peck are all typical defects which can be found under bark distortions. These are all grading defects. A slight bark distortion consisting of a simple horizontal break across the normal bark pattern is not a grading defect.

Bark distortion can occur in three classes: light, medium, and heavy. Generally, light bark distortion is not a grading defect as it is located deep within the quality or heart section of the wood. Medium and heavy distortions are grading defects.
