Of all of the factors that affect wood values, defects are among the most important. They fall into two categories:
  • Those that reduce the volume of sound wood (scale).
  • Those that reduce its strength, durability, appearance, quality, or otherwise limits its utility (grade).

Defects are often divided into two other classifications. These are determined by the location on the log where the defect is observed:

  • Surface Defects
  • End Defects

Detecting, identifying, and evaluating specific defects in hardwood species is necessary to reduce the negative impact they have on the value of individual logs as well as the financial well being of the timber industry as a whole.
